Sundry Sunday :: Rose City 2016

11 Sep

Ming-Na Wen was lovely. Summer Glau was lovely (again). Everything was nice and fun and we are very tired but here are some pictures of drift partner and I.

Sneaky undercover beginning of Civil War Natasha and Wanda. Note the sunglasses and baseball hat, aka Avengers sneak kit.

The terrible Jewel costume on Jessica and the Trish who wrought it.

Sundry Sunday :: both days of this Comic Con.

20 Sep

So I didn’t bother posting last night because we were engaged in an impromptu “crafts for Elizabeth Henstridge” session.  Brett Dalton’s table was covered in crafts like SWWers had been making offerings to their smug-faced god and hers looked more empty, so we had to fix it.  I’m starting this post with the Elizabeth Henstridge story because it was incredibly important and my highlight, though it was today so it wasn’t chronologically primary.  She’s the sweetest woman, just so adorable and generous with her time and warm words: I babbled a whole slew of feelings at her about why Jemma is so important to me and in return received some advice that I’ll admit got me a bit choked up in a positive way, we flaunted our Skimmons and in return received smiles and support.  She noticed our details (which you’ll see in a moment, the new ones) and she even noticed my imitation necklace (I asked a question about costumes at the panel yesterday, so that made me happy).  And she received many gifts: the adorable felt doll that my drift partner and other friend made as they make for all the celebrities, the adorable Perler bead doll that our other friend made last night in the crafts session, an anime/Big Eyes-style portrait of her threatening to murder Ward and a cartoon of her in the TARDIS made by me and my drift partner respectively last night, the flower crown of blue roses (blue because it’s the only color she wore all season, roses because of the necklace) that I made her (because Chloe got one she should too).  She’s an absolutely lovely person and I have nothing but good things to say about her, and damned if her voice isn’t the prettiest thing to listen to.

Anyway.  Onto the con itself.

Yesterday my drift partner was a Red Lantern and our other friend was an Orange Lantern (both dresses made by her).  These are fueled by, respectively, rage and greed.  Comics.

Yesterday my everything friend and I were steampunk Ramona Flowers and Kim Pine (her costume compiled, I believe; my dress made by my mother, bracelets and hairbow i.e. the steampunky bits made mostly by me).  And you’d better believe I was fidgeting with the drumsticks allllll afternoon.

Yesterday other friend was Todd Ingram, though not steampunk.

She also met him, him being Brandon Routh, and he was a lovely gentleman.  We all met him; here is a link to his tweet with his picture with the others and their dolls.

Also, here is a picture of things that people gave Brett Dalton.  The majority of it is uncomfortable; the shot doll is from them and plays “mmm whatcha say” when you squeeze its head; the lizards are from me.  For reasons.

Then today, drift partner and I were as mentioned Skimmons.  Specifically 2.20 “Scars” Skimmons, when Jemma gives Skye the hula doll she rescued out of the Bus before it exploded because feelings feelings Jemma doesn’t really know where she stands with Skye anymore because of everything that’s happened but she still cares about her enough to go find Skye’s seemingly arbitrary personal artifact when they’re about to exit the plane they lived on before it explodes and she stammers over her words because it’s so terribly important and it’s so feelings it’s the greatest scene we are impressed see?

We also ran into a good bunch of fellow MCU people.  Well, first I saw the Bobbi and promptly lost it with joy and hurried over.  After also babbling at her we took pictures.  Here there is a Sailor Hawkeye (that whole group in a moment), movie Hawkeye, comics Natasha, comics Hawkeye, Raina, beautiful Bobbi, us, and military Peggy.  (Alas, we did not run into the Grant Ward we mistakenly cheered at the day before because he looked like a random SHIELD agent, but much like canon he replied with a “Hail Hydra” and we all yelled NOPE at him and if we found him again today we were going to politely request to take a picture doing him damage.  I had a tiny gun, because Jemma can use those now, and drift partner borrowed one of the Bucky guns.)  Because other friends repeated their Bucky and Han Solo costumes.

These are the Sailor Avengers.  (There was also a Sailor Spider-[man], I believe.)  This is completely 100% my jam and I also lost it for them.

Sailors Uranus and Neptune otherwise known as IMPORTANT and BEAUTIFUL.

Cheedo and Dag otherwise known as IMPORTANT and BEAUTIFUL

Steampunk Alice, which I always approve of.

Didn’t actually see too too many Game of Thrones folks this weekend, but here’s a Margaery.

Tadashi!!!  Important because Tadashi and also because I like to represent for my fellow subtle cosplayers.

Pinup Storm, which is just gorgeous she’s gorgeous.

Brett and Elizabeth’s panel was… shall we say, interesting.  Some of the things Brett said made me laugh hysterically though they weren’t funny in the traditional sense, more the ironic sense; Elizabeth is very sweet and charming and diplomatic.  There were far too many SkyeWard people in the audience and too many romantic FitzSimmons people for my liking, but there were a few bursts of applause when I name-dropped Skimmons.

Yes.  Overall, a success.

Sundry Sunday :: Comicon, day 2.

21 Sep

A slightly more tenuous connection today, but still in the casual MCU category.

Today she was Natasha circa Winter Soldier when they’re dressed up like hipsters at the mall and I was Darcy circa Thor 2 when… this.  Except for it was much too hot to wear a knit hat (and the scarf came off pretty much whenever pictures weren’t happening) so I didn’t do that, but these will be reprised next con, so.  Then our other lovely came today and was Jane, and then we happened to find a Thor and request him to do photographs, which he very gamely agreed to, and that third one is a picture of me as Darcy taking a picture of them as Thor and Jane because Darcy would totally be all over that.

This Iron Man was actually someone I saw yesterday and I just forgot to upload the picture, so here!!

This was exciting because I have seen many Aryas but I have not seen any that come with a Syrio Forel before.

And Amber’s is about the only Sucker Punch costume I still make a point to photograph every time.  Just for sentimental reasons.

Finally, I have here a steampunk Tinkerbell, which is amazing.  Her wings were works of art.  The whole outfit was really A+.

Spectacular Summaries Saturday :: Comicon, day 1.

20 Sep

Back for fall con!  To start, bad girl shenanigans!!

We’ve changed the particular details of our Skye and Jemma costumes, but here we are.  At various other points during the day I was wearing my lab coat and she was wearing… not her jacket, because it was very, very warm even for this time of year.  But multiple strangers got what we were doing and were delighted to say the least.

Like this pair of excellent ladies, who respectively were Captain America/Bucky and Black Widow.  As you see Black Widow also requested to take a “ladies of SHIELD” selfie with us, because they were very excited to see us.

And I was excited to see these two, who I… presume were meant to be genderswapped!Archie Sheridan and some variant of Gretchen Lowell.  And I mean, it’s local, it’s Portland, but it’s still a big deal.

The fact that this Tuxedo Mask committed to having a tiny Luna stuck to his shoulder all day is what really impressed me.

I also saw a Sansa and a couple of Danys and a Cersei (I think) and also a couple of Jon Snows but this Melisandre was the only Game of Thrones person I stopped to talk to, really.  She was lovely, though.

And she is going to tell this story because it is more her story than mine.

So, my friend (who has been in our cosplay group at previous cons) and I make cute little felt dolls for actors we like, and even though she couldn’t come to this con, we still made two for the relevant people there, Gigi Edgley of Farscape and Wil Wheaton of the internet. Wheaton has a running gag character called Sparks McGee, who is basically a “cool” version of Wesley Crusher (he wears a cowboy hat and mouths off to Picard), and since we don’t watch any of his other shows really we decided to make him a Sparks doll. This was apparently a great choice, because when he opened the bag he yelled “SHUT UP” in the most excited voice ever. Then he said thank you about 20 times and promised to put Sparks in a safe place so that he would make it home in one piece. Apparently he also tweeted a picture of him with Sparks, which makes the second time that someone famous has done that (since Jaime Murray last summer). Gigi was also delighted with her doll, but technically we weren’t supposed to be taking pictures in that area, so I didn’t push my luck.

Sundry Superlative Sunday :: another Comic Con, day 2 AND my thoughts on the 2013 Emmy awards

22 Sep

Another panel was attended, this one with Jewel Staite AND Christopher Judge AND Alexis Cruz.  It was fun and amusing.  Also we wandered around buying things and generally just partaking of the ambiance.  And making up stories about our costumes.

See, we had British Ladies Day again.  Mostly.  My everything friend was Luna again, albeit a bit more traditional this time (borrowing my Dany wig and doing a more straightforwardly Hogwartsy look).

I was Nora again, although circa a different canonpoint, which is to say last time I was… circa whenever, and this time I was very specifically circa 5.07 “In the Beginning” and the start of 5.08 “Somebody That I Used to Know,” when all the chancellors took hits of Lilith’s blood, then went out and festively massacred Mardi Gras goers, then came back to the Authority headquarters all dripping with blood and crazy and exchanging Mardi Gras beads in a jolly manner.  Hence the blood smeared on my mouth (more on this on Tuesday too) and the beads, as well as the part-leather vaguely tuxedo-looking jacket.

I didn’t have anyone come up and recognize me today (not surprising — I’m the only True Blood cosplayer I’ve ever seen, not counting a couple of people in Merlotte’s shirts, which probably wasn’t even intended as such) but I did have one guy gesture to his mouth and mention that I in fact had something on there.  “As I should,” I replied, smiling beatifically, because occasionally crazy is fun.

My other friend was HG from Warehouse 13 (that’s meant to be her grappler, though it’s just a gun I’d painted to look steampunk — these were very quickly thrown together costumes overall).  We’d established in March why Luna and Nora knew each other, and we also established why HG and Nora would know each other, and then subsequently we established how Luna and HG would interact with each other.

And then my other friend was… Kaylee.  Again, it’s all stuff we already had, and she didn’t want to do a British accent.  Not that we were all doing them consistently, but we all dabbled and slid in and out of it amongst ourselves.  But it works out, because she’s an adorable Kaylee.  (She declared that of course Kaylee would have stolen Jayne’s hat on multiple occasions.)  We also managed to come up with a highly cracked-out explanation as to why Kaylee would know HG, who then would… introduce her to Nora and Luna, I suppose.

This is a picture of HG explaining her tech (it’s a communicator called a Farnsworth, but I don’t know much more about it than that — it’s quite pretty and steampunk, though) to Kaylee, who is intrigued.  Because mechanical things.

And this is a picture of Nora drinking from HG.  For this to make sense, I ask you to disregard the earlier canonpoint, as this is a completely consensual and not-deadly drinking-from.  It’s the other kind.

And here we are with the Angel puppet again.

Here is our Kaylee with another Kaylee as well as an Inara.

And here is a Sailor Jupiter, because I will stop everything to photograph Sailor Senshi.

AND the Emmys.

Otherwise known as, good on you Bobby Cannavale for Boardwalk Empire, good on you Anna Gunn for Breaking Bad because even if I don’t watch it I like you, I did not care about anything else at all and some of it was sincerely perplexing.

Also, I love that both of the tiny clips in the Supporting Actress in a Drama montage for Christina Hendricks were from the one episode this season where she actually got to do anything.

Spectacular Summaries Saturday :: another Comic Con, day one.

21 Sep

Slightly closer to local for me, and very much fun.  Jewel Staite was/is present, and Jewel Staite is the very sweetest.  We also attended a Christopher Judge panel, and that was very much fun as well.  Mostly I’m just putting up pictures because that’s how I do with conventions.

Today we expanded on our All The Summer Glaus theme.  (It wasn’t quite, but more on that in a minute.)  My everything friend was again River, this time with weapons made by the friend who is below.

Who was Cameron from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  (There will be a better shot of her makeup on Tuesday.  For reasons.)

I was again Bennett (do pardon the look on my face; I think I was going for “no please cameras are not fun for the socially challenged” or something).  I got a few variants on the “are you injured or in costume” / “what happened to your arm?” theme, which I also did last time (which is also really a fascinating experiment, in a way) but I got probably near to ten people who either looked at me and exclaimed “Bennett!!” or figured out that I was indeed her after a bit of prompting.

Also, the assistant at Jewel’s autograph table asked the first question, but I explained no it was a costume and what said costume was, and after handing me the autograph Jewel gave me a “well done.”

Really, today was All The Summer Glaus And Also The Amy Acker Who Murdered One, as my other friend was Claire of Dollhouse.  The fake scars barely show in this picture, but those will also be highlighted on Tuesday.

Also here is my friend with my other friends’ Angel puppet.  The Angel puppet got more attention than all of us combined today.

Anyway, onto a few excellent others.  This girl is being Claudia from Warehouse 13, which I do not watch yet but two of my friends do, and they were very excited to see someone being her.

An excellent pair of ladies being Gimli and Legolas with very nice weapons.

And I saw not one but two Repo! cosplayers, which is the most exciting for me (one of these days I’m going to actually wear my Blind Mag costume to a con, but).  I recognized both of them from the back, which is either great or ridiculous; the Shilo is actually part of a local shadowcast, I think, and the lady Graverobber… well, I was delighted, to put it plainly.

lol but really
