Marvel Monday :: Broken Code [an AIDA fanmix]

29 May

broken20code20front

broken20code20back

1. Like This (Marian Call)
I’ve brought a limited set of regular expressions in your size, so use these icons for your feelings so that I can more precisely empathize, so engagement’s optimized. The resolution is so high in here, surround sound is so crisp and clear just like in the montage where we met. How it glows! And no one knows if we’ve felt our feelings yet, if we’ve felt our feelings.

2. Just a Book (Bitter Ruin)
Call, call them out from under the decks of wrecks and I’ll bet you all they’ll be loud, louder than thunder but silent in slumber. These words, nobody ever hears. Just a book to be read, waiting on the seabed under the weighty waves for years.

3. I Am Not A Robot (Marina and the Diamonds)
I’m vulnerable, I’m vulnerable, I am not a robot. You’re lovable, so lovable, but you’re just troubled. Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot. Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot. Can you teach me how to feel real? Can you turn my power off and let the drum beat drop?

4. Dollhouse (Melanie Martinez)
Places, places, get in your places, throw on your dress and put on your doll faces. Everyone thinks that we’re perfect, please don’t let them look through the curtains.

5 Borrowing (Halsey)
Your eyes meet mine, the lights are playing shadows right down to your collar. Tonight I’m borrowing a perfect man, I’m borrowing a broken love. Your love is calling, I’m praying you’ll do anything to stall her. Tonight I’m borrowing a perfect man, I’m borrowing a broken love.

6. Sweet Ophelia (Zella Day)
Singing like it’s a full moon, careless now that he has you. Turns you on to the right songs, promises that you’re hooked on. Oh… Sweet Ophelia, when young blood escapes vows that break go up, up away.

7. Free (Ryn Weaver)
My compass may be broke but you follow where I go and you never really seem to mind it. Sun, stare it in the eye, now I’m blinded by the light that seein’ you with eyes wide open.

8. Diamond Days (Cruel Youth)
Madness is my old friend. We don’t need fancy drinks and penthouse suites to run a riot. The diamond days are done, the diamond days are gone, and I would be a fool to carry on.

9. Green Light (Lorde)
All those rumors, they have big teeth, hope they bite you. Thought you said that you would always be in love but you’re not in love, no more. Did it frighten you how we kissed when we danced on the light up floor? On the light up floor? But I hear sounds in my mind, brand new sounds in my mind, but, honey, I’ll be seein’ you ‘ever I go, but, honey, I’ll be seein’ you down every road, I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it.

10. Monster (Meg Myers)
You said forever, now you look right through me. You said forever, did your words fall short like you? What have I done? I’m a fucking monster when all I wanted was something beautiful.

11. How Does It Feel? (MS MR)
Pleasure in panic, just seize and hold tight, my body will follow if you hold my mind. How does it feel with my teeth in your heart? Don’t back down again, no one leaves a scar quite like I can. How does it feel when you’ve played your last card? In this together now, come this far won’t let you down.

12. Dead to Me (Melanie Martinez)
I need to say sorry, that’s the only thing you say when you lose someone. I used to say I’m sorry for all of the stupid shit you’ve done. So now I’m really sorry, sorry for being the apologetic one, but if I told you I cared, if I told you I care, you would think I was crazy.

13. Terrible Things (April Smith and the Great Picture Show)
I know that I’m inflected, but who could have predicted that monster that I’ve become? I keep things carefully covered so no one will discover that I could be the culprit, I’m sorry I can’t help it.

Music Monday :: on Marian Call in concert

6 Mar

We went after the con on Saturday to a concert in a room in the back of a bar, at drift partner’s encouragement (she’s been to what I’m given to believe is a truly impressive amount of Marian’s concerts), and it was the smallest concert I’ve ever been to. This is a good thing! There were a very few people there and it was a very small venue, perhaps eight seats to a row and maybe ten rows, maybe? “Intimate” is the word that professional publications would probably use, and it sounds a bit pretentious but also it’s true.

But also this might just be Marian. She has a very personal way of singing, making snarky remarks and gesturing with her hands not unlike I do if I’m singing in my own car at a stoplight and singing at every general direction of the audience. Also she riffs, vocally, in a very jazz-standard-y kind of way despite the fact that her stuff is not really jazz; this gives live performances a certain sense of surprise and discovery.

I am somewhat pleased to report that, even as a relatively new initiate to her catalog, I at least knew of most of the songs she performed. Most of the new album was played, of course, with singalongs in a couple of places that I was too shy to partake in but appreciated the sentiment behind, but there were also songs that dated as early as Got to Fly, aka the only of her albums I’d dipped my toes into without drift partner’s pointing, which was nice. There was a humorous political diversion that segued into a singalong rendition of “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” from Monty Python’s Life of Brian (sidenote: it also reminded me how angry I still am about that being nonsensically shoved in at the end of Spamalot where it had not business being, and I’m not even a Monty Python purist).

She promised to do more in the near future, for longer and in larger spaces, so hopefully that will happen soon. We spoke to her afterward, because drift partner is actually somewhat acquainted with her by now (we also spoke to her at her boyfriend’s booth at the con) and she is perfectly lovely. Also she drew a lizard on a rock for us.

Music Monday :: my thoughts on Standing Stones

27 Feb

After all, Marian Call is drift partner’s most beloved singer. And I’ve grown quite fond as well.

“Bones.” Oh oh here comes a beautiful contrast of lyrical lady voice and industrial noise. Those are things I like together very much. The industrial has somewhat subsided giving way into a more traditional melody but it’s beautiful. “So imagination took the hand of memory” that’s the most lovely thing. She does definitely have a way with poignant lyrics and a matching delivery.

“No Paper.” This has a cuter tone. I will also acknowledge how good Marian is at using things in ways that aren’t even that weird but are at least different enough from a lot of pop singers. And just twisting things in unique ways, “treasure map of bones” and stuff.

“Oregon Trail.” Hee. But also it’s not actually funny at all, it’s more of that poignancy, it’s simple and sweet and thoughtful in a way that you really should just try to let come over you. “And digging in the yard we found somebody else’s bones” ow but in a nice way? There’s a really interesting melancholy undertone to this, without it being too overly sad.

“Standing Stones.” Confession, I have been halfway-hearing most of this album all week through drift partner’s headphones, but I’ve been trying not to properly listen until now so I could express feelings articulately. This is a damn anthem, this track.

“Hope.” This is less of a production of a track, but that’s by no means lessening it. There’s guitar that sounds very classic, and it’s thoughtful.

“Like This.” “Send me your criteria and I’ll design the perfect night for you.” This is cute but also it feels kind of tongue-in-cheek. “I imagined me like this.” Well. Then. I feel that this is. Pointed. Is it supposed to? I’m not sure. That might just be me.

“Mediocre Algorithmic First Date.” Wait wait you guys it just got even more what I just was thinking. “He brought a story for me, he had it custom made” UHHHHHHHHHHHH. Wow, I am just falling all over myself about how… very. This is. “It was much too small for me but if I work for it maybe” oh my GOD I am just. Flails someone finally is talking about this.

“Independence.” There’s something almost slinky about this and I like it, but also her slink is never just straightforward. Her slink is very, very intelligent. Which regular slink can be, of course! But this is somehow beyond that.

“Vespers.” These lyrics are so wordy, I love it. I think the thing is that she doesn’t pull punches, and that’s cool, because a lot of songs feel like they’re, I don’t know, in boxes. There are no boxes here.

“The Devil.” I have been prealerted to this one. It is also slinky. “Fear is my old friend, we dated for a while and she still calls me now and then.” So!

“Grandpa Had It Right.” Mm, poetic! And more of that vague melancholy but it’s still not sad it just is. “I never saw stars like that before.”

Music Monday :: my thoughts on Marian Call Sings the Classics, Vol. II

17 Aug

Marian Call is my drift partner’s number one jam, so here I am.  We’ve gone to her both at Emerald City a couple years running now and she seems like a neat lady, and I like what of her stuff I know, which is an ever-increasing amount.

“Sensitive to Bees.”  I don’t get this joke, and neither does she, but all right.  It’s amusing in its way.

“Rainbow Connection.”  Oh!  This version of the song actually… sort of… does something different with it!  I’ve heard covers of this song before (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes doing it punk, etc.) but this is much more interesting and I actually am into it and am not rolling my eyes like I usually do at this song.

“All I Want.”  Do I know this song?  Cover albums are always a fun game of do I know this song or not.  I don’t think I do.  It’s cute, though.  This is cute.

“Conjunction Junction.”  This is grammar humor and I approve.  I actually never watched Schoolhouse Rock as a child, but I did prop-build for an amateur production of the junior version of the stage show once, so I know someo of the tunes.

“Butts.”  I don’t get it.  Okay.

“Birdhouse in Your Soul.”  I am pretty sure I don’t know this song already either.  It’s very cute also, though.

“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”  When I was in first grade, we were allowed to choose our own ten-word spelling list for the week.  I chose this word because I wanted to choose the hardest word I could think of.  Being a child, this was it.  That said, this is cute also.

“I’m Going to Go Back There Someday.”  Another one I don’t actually know but it’s pleasant.  More serious and less cute.  I feel like I should know this but I don’t and that’s going to bother me.  This is very good listening, though.

“Hovering Sombrero.”  Is this really a thing?  It’s cute but… is it really a thing?

“Sweet Baby James.”  Who is this singing now this is not Marian she is harmonizing all right.  Apparently this man is her father, that’s nice.

“Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.”  Ah yes, a song I am very familiar with.  Complete with chorus as per the usual.  She has a way of sounding unrealistically adorable to the point that it’s vaguely dangerous sometimes.

Television Tuesday :: Our Revolution is Long Overdue [a fanmix]

2 Sep

*for television women including but not limited to the pictured who doubtless have some words (and more) for the men in their lives/and or their writers and showrunners.  From a Margaret Cho quote.

our revolution is long overdue (back)

1. Sweet as Whole (Sara Bareilles)
Sometimes I can be perfectly sweet, hot this sugary me stuffed in my sleeve and I talk of ponies and rainbows and things and I’m just who you want me to be.  But like most creatures down here on the ground, I’m composed of the elements moving around and I grow and change and I shift and I switch and it turns out I’m actually kind of a bitch.  But that only happens when I get provoked by some piece of shit asshole we all sadly know and I sit and I write while reminding you all that mean songs are still better than going postal.

2. Black Tongue (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Sunny kept his ring on, red tape so ordinary, love I feel like it was gone, gone, gone, gone, let’s do this like a prison break, I wanna see you squeal and shake.  Boy you just a stupid bitch, and girl you just a no good dick.

3.  Seventeen (Marina and the Diamonds )
You’re a rich little boy who’s had to work for his toys, you’ve got all the sensibilities, oh, of an upper class guy.  No, no I’m not your little slave, no I don’t twist and turn that way, only got bad things to say.  You’re always asking what is up, up with me, could never tell you what happened the day I turned seventeen, the rise of a king and the fall of a queen, oh seventeen.

4.  Palace (Dessa)
Oh that trouble you’ve been looking for, it came looking for you shouldn’t open doors you don’t plan to walk through.  If I were you I‘d pay my dues before I lose. That trouble you’ve been looking for it came looking for you shouldn’t open doors you don’t plan to walk through.  If i were you I’d pay my dues.

5.  Demons (Sleigh Bells)
You drink the wise blood, you’re gonna hear about it, you’ll be taken down brick by brick by brick.  Burn the orphanage, you’re gonna pay for it, they will purify block by block by block.  Demons, come on, you’ve got a vision, you’re on a mission.  Demons live on, and when I die, hang me high.

6.  Flashlight (Ellie Goulding)
Coming down on you with a flashing light, there’s nowhere to run, baby you can’t hide.  Gonna make you move, make you move, make you move.  It’s too late now the table’s turned, there’s no going back and you’ll never learn unless I make you move, I’ll make you move, I’ll make you move, I’ll make you move.  And you think I’m still broken-hearted, but you’ll never win the war you started, you’ll never open your eyes.

7.  Shot You Down (Florrie)
I think about it every day, I shouldn’t have hurt you that way, but it’s a little late to say that I can erase your heartache.  Thinking about it, thinking about it, thinking about it.  Oooooh baby.  I pulled the trigger on our love, keep messing me around.  Got my finger on the gun, bang bang I shot you down.

8.  Sun of a Gun (Oh Land)
Birds sing for you, you can make the blue sky blush, you’ve got them all fooled.  But I am burned out on this rush, I want to change the orbit.  Don’t care what you do now, I want to live in darkness, don’t want to be spun around.

9.  The Lion the Beast the Beat (Grace Potter and the Nocturnals)
It’s time to meet your maker, make the road your undertaker.  Can somebody let the beast out, baby?  Can’t stop the beat, can’t stop the beat, run, but you can’t hide from the heat.  Life is a record, playing on repeat, I’m running wild, with the lion, the beast, the beat.  So don’t you try to tame the lion, just to ride on the horizon.  Can somebody let the beast out, baby?  Yeah, we all hide our desire and then we feel the beat like fire.  Can somebody let the beast out, baby?

10.  Wishing He Was Dead (The Like)
If I could snap that neck, that broken record trainwreck, I might feel okay.  If he could speak the truth or just say sorry, that would be the day.  But he made me crazy, thinking I was wrong, that he wasn’t cheatin’ all along. When I gave him everything that I could give now he’s gonna wish he’d never lived.

11. Gun (CHVRCHES)
Who are you to tell me how to keep myself afloat?  I tread the water all the while, you stuck in the knife that you held at my back.  Did it make you feel so clever?  Did you wear it on your sleeve?  Did you see another lifetime where I was not a part so far entwined?

12. We’re Out for Blood (Marian Call)
Baby you thought I was a goner but you were dead wrong.  Baby I’m back and I brought some friends along.  It’s time to start running boy if you wanna live to learn what happens when you leave your baby behind to burn, burn, burn.

13.  Kill My Boyfriend (Natalia Kills)
You’re the one I want, everything I’m dreaming off.  Don’t make me break his heart into million pieces, no.  But every time I’m with him, I imagine that we’re kissing and I’m wishing he was you all along.  And boy I’m so committed, I’m so deep, there’s no more digging, there’s only one thing I can do to solve this mess, come on.

14.  Salute (Little Mix)
You think we’re just pretty things, you couldn’t be more wrong (we’re standing strong, we carry on).  Knock us but we keep moving up (we’re moving up, yeah).  Can’t stop a hurricane, ladies it’s time to awake (yeah!)

Whedon Wednesday :: Probably Smarter, Technically [a Jemma Simmons fanmix]

23 Jul

probably smarter, technically (front)

probably smarter, technically (back)

1.  Now Is the Start (A Fine Frenzy)
Now, oh, now is the start, oh and it goes with where you go.  Don’t lose faith for the friends you don’t need a thing, you already know you are right as you are.

2.  Academia (Sia)
You can be my alphabet and I will be your calculator and together we’ll work out on the escalator.  I will time you as you run up the down and you’ll measure my footsteps as I pleasure this town.  The mean of our heights is divided by the nights which is times’d by the daggers and the root of all our fights, the pass of your poem is to swathe me in your knowing and the beauty of the word is that you don’t have to show it.

3.  Whistle While You Wait (Marian Call)
And although I do heartily admire folks whose natural graces seem inspired, I expect the truly confident are fewer than I am generally inclined to think and it’s worth a little effort to look ’em in the eye, to whistle while you’re waiting, to flutter ’til you fly.  Oh, it’s worth a little effort and a lot of honesty, it’s worth some work believing, it takes a little practice to learn to be.

4.  My Best Friend is You (Kate Nash)
You are the most clever, most stupid, most whatever, you are the most honourable soldier, super hero, pretty as a cat.  You have integrity that I cannot conceive, you are opinionated, you are my belief.  You are so good, you are so bad, you have experienced things I never have.

5.  Inside Out (Sara Bareilles)
Take your best shot, here I stand, heart in hand and fearless I’m not but I am what I am and I know what I’m not and I know enough to know it’s never gonna be much more than weather.  You can’t drive me away when it’s only rain on the inside.

6.  Science/Visions (CHVRCHES)
With understanding you won’t let it cast you down, a mind full of questions, a current to purify.  Science and vision, be near when I call your name or ask me a question.

7.  Strangeness and Charm (Florence and the Machine)
An atom to atom oh can you feel it on me love and a pattern to pattern oh can you see it on me love.  Atom to atom oh what’s the matter with me love, strangeness and charm.  The static of your arms, it is the catalyst, you’re a chemical that burns there is nothing like this.  It’s the purest element but it’s so volatile, an equation heaven sent, a drug for angels.

8.  Ready to Question (Gabrielle Aplin)
See I’ve seen devils, I’ve seen saints, I’ve seen the lines between them fade.  I’ve seen pictures with no meaning, I don’t know what to believe.  But I’m ready to question (oh, oh) that life is a blessing (oh, oh) so give me a sign, I’mma follow it blind, is there anyone listening?

9.  The Spine Song (Cake Bake Betty)
And you’re scared and you’re sure that your spine will dissolve you will fall to the floor, you will take what you need and the headaches will come but at least you can breathe.  There’s the smoke fills your lungs, we will wait for the day we’ll rejoice when it comes.  On your birthday you woke up the snow was on the ground, you opened books and peeked inside, they kissed you on your crown.  With pins in your fingers you held yourself up high, the picture peeled the person they let themselves divide.

10.  Millstone (Eisley)
I can’t find the secret to survive, to grow old safe and sound, whoa, life is sifting through like the sands in the hourglass.  There’s not a moment to relive my time and space, there’s not a moment to undo anything.  How could I have been this careless, oh whoa, I fear I’m locked inside another cage again.  Shake me from these torturous dreams where I keep screaming, can’t see how to overcome.

11.  I’m Not Your Hero (Tegan and Sara)
I’m not their hero but that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t brave, I never walked the party line, doesn’t mean that I was never afraid.  I’m not your hero but that doesn’t mean we’re not one and the same, feeling like I am now lighting up the hall, I was used to standing in the shadow of a damaged heart, learning all I know now, losing all I did.  I never used to feel like I’d be standing so far ahead.

12. Bravado (Lorde)
I’m faking glory, lick my lips toss my hair and turn the smile on and the story’s brand-new but I can take it from here.  I’ll find my own bravado.  It’s a switch flipped, it’s a pill tipped back, it’s a moon eclipsed, whoa.  And I can tell you that when the lights come on I’ll be ready for this.  It’s in your bloodstream, a collision of atoms that happens before your eyes.  It’s a marathon run or a mountain you scale without thinking of size

13.  Home (Ellie Goulding)
I work until it’s late, walk in and close the gate.  I look in the window and I gaze at my face, every line and every abrasion.  This took my life to make, this took my life to make on my own.  No poison in my bones.  On my own, this is where I build my home, my home.

Television Tuesday :: Cookie Dough Queens [a fanmix]

22 Apr

cookie dough queens (front)

cookie dough queens (back)

1.  The Archetypes (Marina and the Diamonds)
Queen of no identity, I always feel like someone else, a living myth, I grew up in a lie.  I can be anyone (anyone), a study in identity & illusion, an Ode to Cindy (anyone).

2.  Hero of the Story (Regina Spektor)
And we’re going to these meetings but we’re not doin’ any meetin’ and we’re trying to be faithful but we’re cheatin’, cheatin’, cheatin’.  I’m the hero of the story, don’t need to be saved.  I’m the hero of the story, don’t need to be saved.

3.  Glass Ceiling (Metric)
Who let it end up on the ground, how am I gonna know you’re letting me down?  How did I end up on the ground?  Only do what I’m told, only do what I’m told.  Last to leave cold calling. You’re gonna lose your arms, amputate plasticine, there’s no knight in silver armor shining.

4.  Think of You (MS MR)
Dark clouds follow you around, your own worst enemy.  You only picked me up to bring me down, down, down, down, down.

5.  Lungs (CHVRCHES)
You know that this will break us but you push us as far as we can go, taking every chance to find solutions that never make anyone happy.  We are done this time, you don’t owe me, take a final took at me, take it and drink it in.

6.  King of Anything (Sara Bareilles)
I hate to break it to you, babe, but I’m not drowning, there’s no one here to save.  Who cares if you disagree? You are not me, who made you king of anything?  So you dare tell me who to be, who died and made you king of anything?

7.  Renaissance Girls (Oh Land)
I’ll release my money you can be my back bone, I call you honey you can cry on my shoulder.  Let it all breathe, I got a degree in psychology.  Lift me, lift me up where the air is thin and my mind will take off, pull me, pull me down where my love is pure and my feet are on ground.

8.  Your Fault (Marian Call)
Your platitudes were perfect, except for when they weren’t, your logic always flawless and your lessons so well learned.  Thankful as I am for all the tools you gave to me, I will wield them all like weapons if you get close enough to see and you know just what I’m saying, and you don’t know what I’m not.  And you know that I’m not playing, and you know that I have thought this through over and over again, oh, over and over again.

9.  Happy Pop (Elizabeth and the Catapult)
Here’s a happy pop song, think I heard it once before.  Think I wrote it in my sleep last night before I knew what it was written for.

10.  I’m Good, I’m Gone (Lykke Li)
And if you say I’m not okay with miles to go, if you say there ain’t no way that I could know.  If you say I aim too high from down below, well say it now cause when I’m gone, you’ll be calling but I won’t be at the phone.

11.  Dickhead (Kate Nash)
Think you know everything, you really don’t know nothing, I wish that you were more intelligent so you could see that what you are doing is so shitty, to me.

12.  Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me (The Pipettes)
And you might cry half the time (and you don’t know it, no you don’t know it) and you might try to hold my hand again (and you don’t know it, no you don’t know it) and you might cry for some time (you still don’t know it).  Your kisses are wasted on me.

13.  End of the Line (Sleigh Bells)
It didn’t have to be this way, you know it didn’t have to be, but it’s the end of the line, so goodbye.  Can you hear me, can you see me, well it’s the end of the line, so goodbye.  No one loves you up above you, no one hears you, no one sees you.
