Spoiler Alert Saturday :: my thoughts on The Hateful Eight

23 Jan

A semi-thematic list.

  1. I would watch an entire movie about Six-Horse Judy (Zoe Bell, at the top of her adorable game).
  2. I was real worried about the outcome of the film until Chapter Four had unraveled, but it turned out as all right as it was gonna.
  3. I did not realize that I would, in fact, find all of the characters truly hateful.  But for one reason or another, I could viably hate everyone.  Except Six-Horse Judy.
  4. I could see giving Jennifer Jason Leigh the Oscar.  She was fascinating.  (Seeing the above, I fully expected to find at least one sliver of a reason to root for her.  I did not.  This is really incredible work.)
  5. I felt a very strange but very definite joy bubbling up in my chest when the camera focused on her making flirty faces and the instrumental track faded into the White Stripes’ “Apple Blossom.”  I was not expecting that and it made me really happy.  And after this week I needed that.
  6. It also made me really happy when suddenly halfway through the movie a narrator appeared!  Narrating a brief passage of time with deliberate and detailed bluntness.  That shit just makes me happy.
  7. Yes yes give Ennio Morricone every award that score was beautiful and weird and incredible.
  8. Quentin Tarantino has spent an entire career cultivating his aesthetic.  It’s a thing.
