Things in Print Thursday :: a play-by-play of another list of 10 coming-of-age novels

10 Sep

Same qualifications as last week. This list is here, and is of “10 Essential Coming-Of-Age Novels For Adults.”

  1. The House on Mango Street (Sandra Cisneros): Mexican-American female heterosexual protagonist.
  2. The Virgin Suicides (Jeffrey Eugenides): white female heterosexual protagonists, sort of.
  3. Foxfire (Joyce Carol Oates): white female heterosexual protagonist.
  4. Please Don’t Come Back From The Moon (Dean Bakopoulos): white male heterosexual protagonist.
  5. Towelhead (Alicia Erian): mixed Irish-Lebanese female heterosexual protagonist.
  6. A Gate at the Stairs (Lorrie Moore): white female heterosexual protagonist.
  7. We the Animals (Justin Torres): mixed white-Puerto Rican male heterosexual protagonist.
  8. The Virgins (Pamela Erens): white male heterosexual protagonist (narrating a Jewish and Korean-American pair of heterosexual characters).
  9. We Need New Names (NoViolet Bulawayo): Zimbabwean female heterosexual protagonist.
  10. The Last Days of California (Mary Miller): white female heterosexual protagonist.

Okay, so 7/10 have female protagonists and 4/10 have POC protagonists, but oops, none of them appear to be about anyone remotely queer.

–your fangirl heroine.
