Television Tuesday :: a very important request

22 Jul

I’m thinking about putting together a television report card.  Not just the A-F system you see in Entertainment Weekly or something, which doesn’t get into nuances, but a specifically categorized system of sorts, rating not just the student (i.e. show) overall but their performance in certain important categories.

I’m not talking “how well was this written” or “how much sciencing did they do correctly” (I mean, I will admit I like watching some sciencing, but that’s not the point here).  I’m talking categories such as (but hardly limited to) the following:

  • Sexuality: are the characters who are in sexual relationships in healthy sexual relationships?  Are there (gasp) characters in romantic but not sexual relationships (and not just not sexual onscreen, but explicitly not sexual by the choice of both parties, because they aren’t interested in sex now/ever)?  Are there (a variety of) characters who aren’t heterosexual?  Are the not-heterosexual characters’ relationships given equal screen time and narrative respect?  Are the not-heterosexual characters’ sexualities themselves given narrative and canonical respect?  Are characters defined by things other than their sexuality?
  • Diversity: are there characters who aren’t white?  Are the characters who aren’t white given equal screen time and narrative respect?  Do the characters who aren’t white play an important role in the plot?  Are the characters who aren’t white filling a negative stereotype?  Do the characters who aren’t white interact with each other?  Are there characters who aren’t cis men?  Are the characters who aren’t cis men given equal screen time and respect?  Do the characters who aren’t cis men play an important role in the plot?  Are the characters who aren’t cis men filling a negative stereotype?  Do the characters who aren’t cis men interact with each other?

And the like.  It’s a different arrangement of things than the No Trope Bingo, because it goes beyond tropes, it’s about handling.  And anyway, my request for y’all is this: what are other categories that should be on the report card?  I’m not even going to pretend I’d think of all of the important things myself, and if you guys are willing to contribute, I’d be glad of the help.
