Theatre Thursday :: musicals and LGBTQ characters (#-B)

10 Apr

My reason for doing this is simple: long has musical theatre been associated with gay people, and I’m just curious about how many musicals actually feature LGBTQ people in them.  This is according to either if I know the musical or what the Wikipedia page says.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Carl Grubenierre and David Schwartz, minor characters)
9 to 5 (Roz Keith)
A New Brain (Gordon Michael Schwinn and Roger Delli-Bovi)
Across the Universe * (Prudence)
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (Mitzi/Tick Belrose, Bernadette/Ralph, Felicia/Adam, Bob)
Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death (apparently, “the characters include… a drag queen [who may or may not be LGBTQ in actuality but I’m not sure], a lesbian”)
Avenue Q (Rod)
Bare: A Pop Opera (Matt and Peter)
The Big Gay Musical (Paul and Eddie)
The Book of Mormon (Elder McKinley)
Boy Meets Boy (their names aren’t listed, but there are gay men)

11 out of 334 musicals (or 3%) have LGBTQ characters in them.

2 of those feature queer cis females.  1 to 2 of them feature trans characters.
