Fashion Friday :: trendspotting with help from fiction.

7 Mar

As I pointed out after the Oscars last Sunday, there were a few trends this award season, and one of them is the Game of Thrones halter dress, to varying degrees of literal…ness.

sarah michell gellar

Sarah Michelle Gellar at the People’s Choice Awards.  I featured all of these in the linked tumblr post, but they’re good examples and here they are full-length.

This trend also extends beyond awards shows.  Some examples from ModCloth:

And some examples from Nordstrom:

olivia crinkled chiffon high/low halter dress (jenny yoo)

It also extended to figure skaters at the Olympics:

ryuichi kihara

Ryuichi Kihara, half of the Japanese pairs team.

meryl davis

Meryl Davis, half of the American ice dancing team, with both iterations of her free skate outfit.

And so on and etcetera.

The Game of Thrones halter can take a few different forms, but whether it’s fabric joined to the collar or crossed at the neck, the main point is that it’s not a halter that plunges.  Game of Thrones influences fashion in a lot of ways, to the point where I’m sure people don’t even always realize it’s happening anymore; for example, have you noticed that everyone’s braiding their hair now?  They are.  I’m sure this is none of it scintillating information, but I’ve been tracking this trend for a while now, and it’s just getting to the point of hilarity, so I thought I’d document it here for everyone.
