Fashion Friday :: somewhere along the line, I started doing hipster Mad Men. Go figure?

17 May

peggy olson and joan holloway harris (elisabeth moss and christina hendricks)

I swear, I set out to do this straightforwardly.  I love me some vintage, after all.  And I legitimately like these outfits.

open heirloom market coat (modcloth)

But then I started searching for a tan/gray plaid women’s coat.  And I was… ridiculously stumped.  I found this, though, and it was one of those moments where I said “well, if I can’t do it accurately, I’ll embrace the hipsterness of it.”  Open Heirloom Market Coat, ModCloth.

peggy olson (elisabeth moss)

(Just ignore Ted.  It has been spectacularly hard to find decent pictures of… well, anyone this season, really.)  I put this here after I’ve already included the coat because the above picture doesn’t include a shot of what’s under Peggy’s coat.

honeydew it right top (modcloth)

And this will work too.  Honeydew It Right Top, ModCloth.

chatter and chirp skirt (modcloth)

And because it’s hipster (and I’m pretty sure Peggy’s original was a dress, but I couldn’t find a dress I liked, so top and skirt, and I feel weird if both the top and skirt are just solid color and the same general color) birds on it.  Chatter and Chirp Skirt, ModCloth.

millinery masterpiece hat (modcloth)

Well, hers doesn’t have a veil, but this is still closer than much of the outfit.  Millinery Masterpiece Hat, ModCloth.

craft faire flat in cream (modcloth)

And I’m almost positive Peggy’s shoes are kitten heels, but — these will do.  They match the coat nicely.  Craft Faire Flat in Cream, ModCloth.

open blazer (eliza j)

But it’s an open blazer!  It’s… at least the right color, I sigh to myself.  Open Blazer, Eliza J.

owl that and more top (modcloth)

But because it’s open it can be worn with this familiar beauty.  (More hipster time!) Owl That and More Top, ModCloth.

style essential skirt in blue (modcloth)

And this skirt is pretty close, actually.  Style Essential Skirt in Blue, ModCloth.

monet 1960s gold tone butterfly pin (etsy)

I don’t think I can explain how happy I am that my Joanie is wearing a butterfly pin.  Monet 1960s Gold Tone Butterfly Pin, KlinesJewelry at Etsy.

hot on your helix bracelet (modcloth)

I figured since I used this one for Joan before, I can use it for her again.  Hot on Your Helix Bracelet, ModCloth.

's marvelous heel (modcloth)

And because hipster pinup always seems to involve patent leather 4-inch Mary Janes in my mind, here.  ‘S Marvelous Heel, ModCloth.

Fashion Friday :: not that she’s not basically a pinup vampire all the time, but.

25 Jan

Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) is also old enough to have been around in the considerably pinuppier 1950s and such.  Pam is also the owner of a fabulous wardrobe.  That’s all there is to that.

pam de beaufort (kristin bauer van straten)

Yes.  She’s fabulous.  Period.

courtesan wiggle dress in mauve rose (pinup girl clothing)

Courtesan Wiggle Dress in Mauve Rose, Pinup Girl Clothing.

micheline dress in red with black lace (pinup girl clothing)

Micheline Dress in Red with Black Lace, Pinup Girl Clothing.

janelle dress in black (pinup girl clothing)

Laura Dress in Black, Pinup Girl Clothing.

All of these dresses are of a very certain type, and this goes to what I kept talking about in my Pam clothesmeta.  Pam is always on, as in always presenting.  Sure, I bet 1950s Pam had a nice little collection of sweaters and good girl skirts, but most of the skirts I’m finding are circle skirts, and I can guarantee that even good girl 1950s Pam did not do circle skirts.  Tight and seductive is the thing here, it’s what she’d want to be presenting in certain occasions, so present she is.

harlow pump in black patent (pinup girl clothing)

I think it should be obvious to everyone by now that my default when doing 1950s/1960s styling is always going to be black pumps.  Always.  Harlow Pump in Black, Pinup Girl Clothing.

black leather fingerless gloves (chicnova)

Because when she’s putting on the pinup seductress, she’s also a teensy bit rockabilly.  Yes.  Black Leather Fingerless Gloves, Chicnova.

red classy gothic necklace (etsy)

And I don’t know how vintage this is, but I liked it well enough.  Red Classy Gothic Necklace, lovelylizzesdesigns on Etsy.

Fashion Friday :: it’s crazy hipster priestess time!

21 Sep

Oh, Melisandre (Carice van Houten).  Crazy priestess Melisandre, who would be a dangerous superhipster in her cultishness.

That giant cowl neck is basically like having a hood.  And like I said, she is dangerously hipster.  Best in the Burgh-undy Coat, ModCloth.

Oh, and she’s got her sweater dress under her coat, just because she can.  She’s so cool she doesn’t worry about overheating, and she doesn’t care if she’s wearing basically the same color all over.  Monochromatic outfits are ironically cool.  Rusted Route Dress, ModCloth.

Super-giant jewelry, because understatement is over.  Goddess Necklace, Large Jeweled, by 2CrownsBoutique at Etsy.

Because back in the day, hipster Melisandre was totally a riot grrrl.  Camden Town Boots, ModCloth.

And to top it off.  Since red is her signature color.  Lipstick in Glamour, ModCloth.

Fashion Friday :: well, it’s impossible to style Inara straight from canon.

13 Jul

So we adapt.

This is how I deal, incidentally, with the onslaught of feelings I was having earlier from reading about the SDCC Firefly panel.  I deal so excellently well.  But I realized that before last week, I had never actually done an Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin) fashion post.  And that is actually catastrophic, because Inara is beautiful and possibly my all-time favorite female character that I have never once actually said “oh, welp, I’m that” about.  Even if I have to, as with Dany, adapt and make it nowadayscompatible.

This dress has a very different neck, obviously.  But the color is perfect and I like it.  Sunset Seeker Dress, ModCloth.

I don’t know.  This is one of Inara’s casual dresses, and with casual dresses, she wears sandals.  And as wedges go, these aren’t absurd.  Vine by Me Wedge, ModCloth.

This necklace is pretty.  It is.  Turquoise Stone and Maroon Seed Bead Necklace, found on Etsy.

Apparently, these are called slave bracelets.  I never knew that before, and I don’t know how to feel.  Gold or Silver Leather Turquoise Slave Bracelet, also found on Etsy.

Fashion Friday :: not one but three hits of Joan beauty to wrap up the Mad Men season five series.

15 Jun

Since it’s the last one for the season series, I figured why not go out with a bombshell bang, because I love my Joan (Christina Hendricks as if you didn’t know by now) so very much.  And because, like I mentioned on Tuesday, GLASSES CHAIIIIN.

First off, outerwear that is beautiful.

This is an exorbitantly expensive coat, as per it is Burberry, but it’s the principle of the thing and this is all hypothetical.  So.  Burberry Brit Trench Coat.

Gloves that are brown.  Dooney & Burke Side Stitched Glove.

A nice little silk scarf.  Vera All Silk Scarf in Floral Watercolors of Fuchsia and Lavender, Etsy.

An also exorbitantly expensive example handbag.  Fossil Vintage Re-Issue Top Zip Satchel.

Now.

A nice vintage suit.  1960′s Peck & Peck Light Blue Scottish Wool Jacket Skirt Suit 11-137.

Some nice simple glasses. Prada PR17MV 1AB1O1 Eyeglasses Gloss Black Frame 52-16-135.

Not much to look at, considering it’s displayed in its plastic thing, but you get six when you order one and they’re very effective.  Glasses Holder Eye Wear Chain Gold Eyeglass Holder – 6 PC.

The everpresent pen necklace, of course.  1960s Vintage Inspired Gold Tone Pen Necklace, 1928.

A nice gold brooch.  Vintage flower brooch, gold flower, Etsy.

Some earrings to go with.  Curved Leaf Studs, Gold Tone, Etsy.

And finally, a triumphant red dress of capable glory.

Not a perfect replica, but very solidly useful in the same way.  Captain Red Pencil Dress, Bettie Page Clothing.

Keeping with the exorbitantly expensive Burberry theme.  Burberry Brogue Detail Leather Pumps.  (Yes her shoes in this scene are brown.  Other pictures show it.)

Fashion Friday :: a fierce, emotion-inducing Mad Men lady fashion double feature

1 Jun

Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) my love.  Peggy my darling.  I am so proud of you but you also made me chew on my lip compulsively with feelings every time you were on screen this episode.

Let’s do this the most modern way ever, because this dress is totally the now version of that one.  Freeway From Commitments Dress, ModCloth.

Low heels are practical.  Peggy is practical.  Go with it.  Go About Your Afternoon Heel in Black, ModCloth.

These are pretty, but not too flashy.  Peggy is pretty, but not too flashy.  Welcome Bach Earrings, ModCloth.

And another cute coat.  Everyone on television has such nice outerwear, I’m jealous.  Wuthering Delights Coat, ModCloth.

And Joan (Christina Hendricks) my darling.  Joan my sweet.  This is a cap from season four, but she wore this dress again briefly in this episode and I was giddy because I love this dress (and I love that they rewear clothes).  I am still processing this episode emotionally, but baaaby.  That’s all I can really say.

There’s actually a website that replicates Joan’s dress custom made, but for already-made alternatives that are similar thematically but not the same, there’s this great Stop Staring! dress.

Yet another pair of black pumps.  Why not.  What a Gala Heel, ModCloth.

And the 1928 pen necklace, again.

And here’s a set of gold leaf earrings and a brooch from Etsy to finish it off.

Fashion Friday :: office Joanie is back and there is much celebrating.

27 Apr

I know, I know, I know.  This is getting more and more insane, but I just had to do something with this Joan outfit.  (It’s the only picture I could find, so go with me.)  I would probably blog every single one of Joan’s (Christina Hendricks, I’m starting to feel ridiculous clarifying it repeatedly, but consistency is important) outfits if it wasn’t time-intensive and, you know, insane, but this one struck a chord with me because I basically own this dress.  This was actually last week’s episode, not this one, but there are so many outfits and so little time.  Something ridiculous like that.

This is the Rita Dress by Bettie Page Clothing.  I purchased it… oh, a year ago, now, a bit more, off the website; it’s now part of my go-to “dressing up for events or the theater or something”/”I am shamelessly ripping off Joan Holloway Harris” wardrobe.  It is not perfectly the same.  Joan’s dress has a different neckline; the Bettie Page dress has a belt.  But it’s still close enough to count as a weird example of my vague wardrobe-related prescient ability, I think.  Especially since the last time I wore this dress, one of my man-friends explicitly told me that it reminded him of her.  (In a typical handwavey “you know what I’m talking about, her, you know” kind of way, but still.)

Oh, and here, the pen necklace is back.  I will include it again, because it is the most lovely and practical.  Gold Tone Pen Necklace, 1928.

Here’s a scarf that could do; found on Etsy, a vintage Vera Neumann, apparently.  I don’t know who Vera Neumann is.  But damn, I need to buy more scarves.  It’s part of that aforementioned “I am shamelessly ripping off Joan Holloway Harris” thing.

As pretty much usual, these earrings are currently out of stock, but they might be back, who knows.  Never Too Jaded Earrings, ModCloth.

And surprise, surprise, I’ve managed to find yet another pair of black ModCloth pumps.  I don’t actually remember what her shoes were like in this particular scene, but I can assume they were black pumps.  Black pumps work with everything.  Crossover Star Heel.

Fashion Friday :: because vintage lingerie is pretty.

13 Apr

Yes.  While the Mad Men season is running, I’ll probably be doing this repeatedly.  Because no fashion makes me happier than Mad Men fashion, and no Mad Men fashion makes me happier than my Joan’s (Christina Hendricks).  (My Joan, who I am so rutting proud of.)  So this week, vintage-looking lingerie, as inspired by her awesomeness.

First off, that beautiful slip (I am a big fan of beautiful slips).

Two beautiful black slips, here we go.   Elegance At Its Best Full Slip in Black and Rose By Any Other Name Slip in Noir, both ModCloth.  I advocate wearing slips all the time.  I can’t not wear my fancy pinup dresses without a slip now.  It’s become habit.

Pretty scarves, naturally.  Joan must own at least fifteen pretty scarves.  This one is from Etsy; they can be found in many places, I’m sure.

Obviously, I couldn’t find any recreations.  But here is a whole slew of teal Etsy vintage nightgown finds.  All of which are beautiful and suitable and generally lovely.

(Also, I am going to take this m0ment to mention slightly nonsequitorially and tl;dr-ily about how absolutely much I love it when her hair is mostly-down like it is through a lot of this episode.  I really, really love it.)

Do we ever see Joan’s feet in these scenes?  No.  Do I completely believe that she has a pair of feathery slippers?  Yes.  These ones are vintage Fredericks of Hollywood.  When Joan is alone in her jammies, as in season four, I assume she’s barefoot.  When (other people are nearby and) she’s working lingerie, I imagine these would be used.  Yes.

Fashion Friday :: and then Joan Harris made me actually interested in pants.

13 Jan

Yes, I’m in the middle of a drawn-out Mad Men rewatch, which began months ago and got hiatused for other things, but has been in full swing in this, the January of Nothing On First Run.  And season three was just finished.  Season three, by the end of which my Joanie is so triumphant and glorious and efficient and happy, and by which I hate having to write her married name but I do, and by which she’s actually convinced me that cigarette pants are sometimes a good idea.  Sometimes.  Maybe.

Why yes, this is the same cardigan involved in the Bennett outfit that I invented last week.  But I figured that since I was putting them so close together, it could be a game.  See how many things I can do with the same cardigan.  At least two.  BP. Long Sleeve Crewneck Cardigan, Nordstrom.

Everyone needs a white button-up.  Even I have a white button-up (how else could I have a Hogwarts uniform costume?) and I don’t really do the “basics” thing like you’re supposed to.  This is a really standard white button-up.  Foxcroft Diamond Jacquard Shirt, Nordstrom.

Or, if you want to interpret a bit loosely, and in a fancier, off-whiter fashion, there’s this option.  It’s apparently got a removable necktie, too, but remove that.  And just work with this.  It’s so pretty.  Lady on Lexington Top, ModCloth.

Because you just know that if Joanie took the sweater off, her shirt would be tucked into her pants, and they’d be beautiful like this.  Heart Breaker Pants, ModCloth.  Which are currently out of stock, but ssh.

(This outfit is shaping up to be spectacularly Nordstrom-influenced.)  The only cap in which you could see Joanie’s shoes in this scene was too far away for use, but, though you can’t see if they’re small heels or flats, they’re definitely, beautifully Mary Janes.  Børn ‘Dublin’ Flat, Nordstrom.

And if you want to make it a little more modern, and you want a teensy heel, there’s something like this.  PIKOLINOS Ginebra Mary Jane Pump, Nordstrom.

Again.  Not a perfect recreation.  But this coat’s got the collar, the color, the subtle sass.  And therefore, I like it.  How You Dune Coat, ModCloth.

Use the same purse as before, but tie on a new scarf.  This one is a bit shinier than the example, but it’s pink and orange and paisley and cute and found on Etsy.

Pin your hair up, grab a clipboard, and you’re ready to go.

Fashion Friday :: when I rewatch Mad Men, I get in this place.

24 Sep

Namely, this place of I want Joan’s (Christina Hendricks) wardrobe.  There is nothing new or shocking about the admiration I have for my Joanie’s dress sense, but it can never be said enough.  ModCloth actually has an “Office Supervisor Dress” recently posted, but as beautiful as it is, it’s not quite Joan: that skirt?  Lovely, but Joan’s about the straight tight silhouette.  The dress is Bettie Page, and it’s got a straight-skirted silhouette alternate, but it’s listed on the Bettie Page site as the “Secretary Dress” — and it’s still not quite Joan.  Closer, but not exact.

No, tonight I’m going to attempt to recreate a different look of Joan’s, this one a dress she’s worn several times.  This styling is based off of 1×08, “The Hobo Code,” when everyone goes out to dance and drink to celebrate Peggy’s promotion.

So we begin, after I take a moment to admire her hair in this scene; I think this is my absolute favorite “her” hair.  Just.  So.  Adorable.

The dress isn’t exactly the same.  It’s a paler shade of pink, the neckline is a bit different, but having searched all of my go-to pin-up sources (ModCloth, Bettie Page, Stop Staring) I couldn’t find one that gave me a better “this is correct” feeling.  Billion Dollar Baby Dress, Stop Staring.

Particularly when you add in the belt.  The belt really makes it.  This one was just found on Amazon.

Do you know how difficult it is to find proper vintage gloves online and not get motorcycle gloves or opera gloves?  Very hard.  But these are neat.  These come from Girl Stuff Vintage Clothing.

I feel somewhat smug reporting that I purchased a similar bag almost two years ago (has it been that long?) at Target for maybe $25, completely by accident (or by psychic connection to Ms. Holloway’s wardrobe?) but any black patent bag will really do.  This one just happens to be true vintage.  Found on Bonanza.com.

Of course, a neat little matching vintage scarf for tying on the purse.  Found on Etsy.

Alas, this has been sold, but it’s just so perfect, and it’s not difficult to find headbands that are black with a bow.  I just didn’t feel like searching for another when this is ideal.  You could even make one yourself.  Vintage Bow at a Glance Headband, Modcloth.

I’m skipping her watch, as it’d be the same I posted in a previous Joan fashion post, probably, and moving right along to earrings.

Alas, more out of stock items, but like the headband, similar earrings would be easy enough to find, and it’s ModCloth, so they’ll probably restock eventually.  Parlour Room Royalty Earrings.

More convenient black pumps!  How many pairs will I be able to find, I wonder?  Patent Office Heel in Ink, Modcloth.
