Television Tuesday :: Pretty Much the Queen [a Jessica Hamby fanmix]

5 Mar

pretty much the queen (front)

pretty much the queen (back)

1. Old Trains (Merriment)
Well I miss my old house and my old room, the soft, faint whistle of the trains at 3 a.m. and at five in morning too.  How have you been?  Same as always, or is there something you’re not telling me?  So tell me now, what’s taken the corners of your mouth and made you smile so?

2. Lost Kitten (Metric)
Don’t say yes if you can’t say no, victim of the system, say it isn’t so.  Squatted on the doorstep, swollen on the blow, leaving without you, can’t say no.  Halfway starts with happiness for me, halfway house, lost kitten in the street.  Hit me where it hurts, I’m coming home to lose, kitten on the catwalk, high-heeled shoes.

3. Dangerous (This Girl)
So I guess I’m ready for the rush, I don’t wanna live without it.  Gonna make me blush (you’re dangerous), nothing I can do about it.  Now I know why they’re calling it a crush (you’re dangerous), I don’t mind what they say, you be my big mistake and I’ll be yours to take apart waiting for you to break my heart.  Bleeding in your arms, looking for trouble, certain that your love’ll break my heart.

4. Debate Exposes Doubt (Death Cab for Cutie)
Finally there is clarity and there is purpose after all, but every night ends the same as I’m collapsing once more by your side. Finally there is clarity, this tiny life is making sense.  And every drop numbs the both of us, but I alone am staggering.

5. 192 Days (Eisley)
You look so fair in the loving moonlight, I’ll stand beside you, take a photograph, preserve the memory of you and me.  And when it grows dark I won’t be afraid, take my little hand and dance with me instead.

6. Death Proof (Kate Nash)
Burn, burn, burn my heart baby, take a piece ’cause I don’t need all of it.  Don’t have time for your cruel ways and I ain’t wondering ’bout numbered days ’cause… I don’t have time to die.

7. Falling Away With You (Muse)
All of the love we left behind, watching the flash backs intertwine.  Memories I will never find so I’ll love whatever you become.  And forget the reckless things we’ve done, I think our lives have just begun, I think our lives have just begun.

8. Fascination (La Roux)
It’s been seven hours long and your shadow still hangs on, you’ve been two weeks gone so tonight I followed you home.  There are so many different ways of collecting all the strays, the ones that get away.

9. Sacrilege (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Fallen for a guy, fell down from the sky, halo round his head, feathers in our bed, in our bed, in our bed.  It’s sacrilege, sacrilege, sacrilege, you say, it’s sacrilege, sacrilege, sacrilege, you say.

10. So Long (Rilo Kiley)
Watch me fly away through the night sky yeah, now that all you touched has finally turned to gray and roads can’t hold us down, winds will move us around with no need to return to this gray town.  Want to bet I can tell you’ve been in bed for too long, so let’s just say so long.

11. Happier (A Fine Frenzy)
It’s not the words that make it final.  You’ve said such things before to rival them, but it’s how you say ‘em now that’s changed, cold but sympathetic all the same.  Lie to convince me that I’ll be better off so, you go on and I’ll be happier, I’ll be happier, you go on, yeah, you go on, you’ll be gone and I’ll be happier.

12. The End (Ellie Goulding)
We’ve only ever kissed lying down, we’ve only ever touched when there’s no one else around.  I can be elusive if you want me to, I’m not being intrusive, I just wish I knew the truth.

13. Jessica (Regina Spektor)
I can’t write a song for you, I’m out of melodies.  I can’t write a song for you, but I am asking please, Jessica, wake up.  Jessica, wake up.

Music Monday :: 6 more examples of instrumental music that isn’t a score

25 Feb

Or rather, 4 examples of instrumental music that isn’t a score and 2 songs that both have minute-plus instrumental intros that halfway count.

6. “I Will Possess Your Heart,” Death Cab for Cutie
I will keep finding reasons to mention this song forever, I really really will.  (This is one of the ones with the giant intro.)

5. “Natural Anthem,” the Postal Service
And I haven’t talked nearly enough about this song, have I?  I am also obsessed with it.  And I am fairly convinced that the minute-plus intro to this song is actually the musical version of what returning to Dollstate via the chair feels like.

4. Several tracks on The Hazards of Love, the Decemberists
I also talk about this album all the time.  It’s been years and I’m still not over it.  This is one of those lists where it’s mostly just a list with minimal commentary, but the pieces speak for themselves.  And honestly, sometimes I wish these instrumentals weren’t tied to this narrative, because I want to do wacky mixy things with them but can’t untie them from their context.

3. Also a bunch of Pink Martini songs
When they’re not doing things in other languages, or doing wacky social danceable tracks, they do have instrumentals.  I don’t know all of Pink Martini’s catalogue, but I do know that my favorite of their instrumentals is “Song of the Black Swan,” off of Hang On Little Tomato.  This is for reasons that three years later I still don’t know if I’ll ever share with you (but maybe).

2. “Horrorbeach Pt. II,” Horrorpops
This is a beautiful, dark, creepy rockabilly jam, and it’s weird, and it’s perfect.

1. “3 Birds,” the Dead Weather
Mmm.  But how much do I love that their instrumental jam puts birds on it?  Really, really grunge/garage birds.

Whedon Wednesday :: Alpha Meet Omega [an Alpha/Echo fanmix]

20 Feb

1. Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect (The Decemberists)
And I am nothing of a builder but here I dreamt I was an architect, and I built this balustrade to keep you home, to keep you safe from the outside world.  But the angles and the corners, even though my work is unparalleled, they never seemed to meet, this structure fell about our feet and we were free to go.  And try one, and try two, guess it always comes down to alright, okay, guess it’s better to turn this way.

2. She’s Just Like Me/Taking Time (The Apples in Stereo)
She’s just like me, but she can see the sad faces, she knows they’re there, always aware of empty spaces.  She knows me well, and she can tell slight changes, she’s just like me, and she can see time wasted.  Turn your eyes away from here, she yearns to fly away from here.  I know her well, and I can tell when she’s restless.  I’m a lot like her, but I can’t answer all her questions.

3. The Wake Up Song (The Submarines)
We try our best, it’s our big test.  You’re looking east and I’m lost out west, can’t you hear me?  We’re moments away, moments away, let’s burn the house and run away.  Moments away, just seconds too late.

4. Animal (Jenny and Johnny)
We must rearrange reality, shuffle all the cards, play the joker with the queen just to make her scream.  To destroy all our enemies must investigate our friends, find the ones who don’t believe, hang them from the trees.  If you lose your fear of God you are an animal at heart.

5. Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) (The White Stripes)
Well, everybody’s reaction is changing you, but their love is only a fraction of what I can give to you.  So let’s do it, just get on a plane and just do it, like the birds and the bees and get to it, just get out of town and forever be free.  Forever, I wonder we could stay together, it could change if you want for the better, just turn down my shirt and lay down next to me.

6. Birthday Song (Ben Lee)
And you, you know what it means to be true and searching like me.  You’re the only thing I need, the only thing I need, the only thing on my mind all the time.  And you gave me a reason to give you my soul, I’ll give you it all.

7. You Will Be Mine (The Narrative)
Well I talked and I learned and my tongue couldn’t turn its tricks on you, so I tripped and perspired and fled from your island to plan my next move.  And all this time I’m waiting for a taste of what you hide, but I’ll know better when I am in too deep, you will be mine.  You will be mine, you will be mine, you will be mine.

8. Date With The Night (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Don’t tell me to fix her, don’t tell me to fix her, just take a bite.  No hanging no picture, blind out my sight.  Dropping brides at the altar, both thighs squeeze tight, choke choke choke choke choke choke choke choke choke choke.  I’ll send it to you, I’ll set it off.

9. Soulmates (Placebo)
This one world vision turns us into compromise, what good’s religion when it’s each other we despise?  Damn the government, damn their killing, damn their lies.  Hush, it’s okay, dry your eyes, soulmate dry your eyes, dry your eyes, soulmate dry your eyes, ’cause soulmates never die.

10. Map of the Problematique (Muse)
Life will flash before my eyes, so scattered and lost.  I want to touch the other side and no one thinks they are to blame.  Why can’t we see that when we bleed we bleed the same?  I can’t get it right, get it right since I met you.

11. Store Bought Bones (The Raconteurs)
Waiting on the rising sun, clutching at your holstered gun, praying on a shooting star that I can be wherever you are.  Looking through a telescope, maybe there’s a sign of hope, leaving everything behind, stirring a store bought mind.

12. Summer Skin (Death Cab for Cutie)
On the night you left I came over and we peeled the freckles from our shoulders, our brand new coats so flushed and pink and I knew your heart I couldn’t win.

13. Let’s Call It Love (Sleater-Kinney)
My dear, look at my face. I’ve been waiting for you in the same old place. I’ve got a long time for love. Jewels could spill from my cup but it’s all locked down and I’m all locked up. I’ve got a long time for love. A woman is not a girl, I could show you a thing or two. I’ve got a long time for love. Come on let’s go to the mat, hit the floor honey, let’s battle it out. I’ve got a long time for love.  Slow moves and dirty tricks, want it like you never have.  Timing and tiger strength, strategy will put you past.  Show me your darkest side and you better be my bloody match.

Fictional Friday :: With Jet Packs [a Scott/Ramona fanmix]

11 Jan

with jet packs (front)

with jet packs (back)

1. Little Cream Soda (The White Stripes)
Well every highway that I go down seems to be longer than the last one that I knew about, oh well.  And every girl that I walk around seems to be more of an illusion than the last one I found, oh well.

2. Brightest Hour (The Submarines)
Wandering through starry skies, and when tomorrow’s day arrives I’ll be a moment closer to the brightest Hour here with you.

3. Time Running (Tegan and Sara)
News broke today so we’re not talking, I think it’s best we do a little bit of stopping.  I want a house on a beach and you in my dreams, I need water, yeah, and a love love love love.

4. Sick Muse (Metric)
You better watch out Cupid stuck me with a sickness, pull your little arrows out, let me live my life, the one I’d better lead.  All the blondes are fantasies.  And we looked at them eleven ways, you said, “Look at me” and looked away and you wrote the song I wanna play, I’ll write you harmony in C.

5. Gotta Figure This Out (Erin McCarley)
I separated my heart from my head to feel out what’s inside.  I don’t like what I see, so I say good night, don’t wake me ’cause I’m dreaming in color, black and white is not my friend, candy coated figures hold me in my bed.  I’ve never been so deep inside a shadow, I’ve never been so insecure of what I know.

6. Lies (The Swell Season)
The little cracks they escalated and before you know it is too late for making circles and telling lies.  You’re moving too fast for me and I can’t keep up with you, maybe if you’d slow down for me I could see you’re only telling lies, lies, lies.

7. Near to You (A Fine Frenzy)
You and I have something different and I’m enjoying it cautiously, I’m battle scarred, I am working oh so hard to get back to who I used to be.  He’s disappearing, fading subtly, I’m so close to being yours.  Won’t you stay with me please?

8. Scissor Runner (Jenny and Johnny)
She runs with scissors, she delivers all my mail right under my door.  You’re sincerely lost completely.  She ain’t a princess, but she’s an artist, painting a portrait all over my heart.

9. Flaming Heart (M. Ward)
And the flaming stars I had are gone, they burned out over the hill. You know the flaming heart can’t get his fill, but the flaming heart will try and try as he will.  Ooh, I got a flaming heart. Ooh, I got a flaming heart. I gotta roll like a tire I’ve got a love that’s mighty like a rose.

10. Cheesy Love Song (Christie DuPree)
How am I supposed to let this go?  Do I change my heart or yours?  And I promise it’ll be okay if you need to take it out on me and I promise not to bug you when you’re working or you need your space.  I want to call you baby, I never wanted to call anyone baby before.

11. Invincible (Muse)
During the struggle they will pull us down but please, please, let’s use this chance to turn things around and tonight we can truly say: together we’re invincible, together we’re invincible.

12. More Adventurous (Rilo Kiley)
I’ve felt the wind on my cheek coming down from the east and thought about how we are all as numerous as leaves on trees.  And maybe ours is the cause of all mankind: get loved, make more, try to stay alive.

13. A Movie Script Ending (Death Cab for Cutie)
Now we all know the words were true in the sappiest songs (yes, yes). I’ll put them to bed, but they won’t sleep, they’re just shuffling the sheets, they toss and turn (you can’t begin to get it back). Passing through unconscious states, when I awoke I was on the onset of a later stage, the headlights are beacons on the highway.

Whedon Wednesday :: A Series of Excuses [a Whiskey - Claire fanmix]

21 Nov

1. Disarm (The Civil Wars)
Disarm you with a smile and cut you like you want me to, cut that little child inside of me and such a part of you.  Ooh, the years burn.

2. Stockholm Syndrome (Muse)
I won’t stand in your way.  Let your hatred grow and she’ll scream and she’ll shout and she’ll pray, and she had a name, yeah she had a name.

3. Company Calls (Death Cab for Cutie)
I’ll take the best of your bad moods and dress them up to make a better you, ’cause all the company calls amount to one paycheck.  I’d squeeze a heart through my fingertip but I type too slow to make expressions stick, and it’s like TV with a microchip.

4. Doctor Blind (Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton)
My baby’s got the lonesome lows, don’t quite go away overnight, doctor blind just prescribe the blue ones.  If the dizzying highs don’t subside overnight, doctor blind, just prescribe the red ones.

5. The Point of It All (Amanda Palmer)
But no one can stare at the wall as good as you, my baby doll, and you’re aces for coming along, you’re almost human, after all.  And you’re learning that just ’cause they call themselves friends doesn’t mean they’ll call.  They made the comment in jest, but you’ve got the needle, I guess that’s the point of it all.

6. Many Shades of Black (The Raconteurs)
Let it out, let it all out, say what’s on your mind.  You can kick and scream and shout and say things that are so unkind, yeah, see if I care.  See if I stand firm or if I fall ’cause in the back of my mind and on the tip of my tongue is the answer to it all.

7. End of Amnesia (M. Ward)
Instrumental.

8. La Familia (Mirah)
Let’s none of us forget about who we are.  So choose a path and follow it, take a pill and swallow it.  None of us forget about who we are, it’s not forever we can fool around in the dark.  If we sleep together would it make it any better?  If we sleep together would you be my friend forever?

9. Here Before (Lissie)
I ask the sky: tell me which way to go, how will I know to shine again?  I’ve been here before, I’ve seen it all and I can’t take no more, I mean it, I’ll go.  And this is the time, the time to change my life, yeah these are the times reaching up to find.

10. Helplessness Blues (Fleet Foxes)
What’s my name, what’s my station, oh just tell me what I should do.  I don’t need to be kind to the armies of night, that would do such injustice to you.

11. Pretender (Eisley)
You are so passive, you’re hiding, you are just standing on the edge, pretender.  Everything is normal, everything is fine, I don’t mean to hurt you, but I think you are lying.  Everything is normal, everything is fine, I don’t mean to hurt you, but I think you are lying.

12. Sleeper (Laura Gibson)
Oh sleeper, my keeper of days, we can’t get back the spring once it’s passed, for I was born in a colder time and we made our vows in ice and steel.

13. The Memory Machine (Julia Stone)
The blind loving the blind, and our voices become our fingers, and you touched me with your song and touched me all night long.  I miss you, I miss you, and the memory machine, making whiskey from the things we no longer need.

A Series of Excuses at 8tracks.

Music Monday :: 6 creepy as hell songs, why not.

29 Oct

For Halloween, ish.  Even though none of these, literally none of them, are “spooky spooky Halloween monster” creepy.

6. “I Will Possess Your Heart,” Death Cab for Cutie
This is… basically an ode to obsession.  I mean, there’s a reason it’s on my Eric/Sookie mix.  Because obsession.  Mind you, I still love this song, I love it a lot.  It’s deceptively cute (remember that Ben Gibbard problem?) and it’s a really great jam.  But it’s creepy.

5. “You Will Be Mine,” The Narrative
I think I’ve mentioned this song before.  And it’s creepy for the exact same reasons as the above.  It’s on a different mix, one I haven’t yet put up, but it suits with the creepy as well.

4. “Special Death,” Mirah
Oh my god, but I’m obsessed with this song.  I’ve mentioned this before how many times?  It never stops being true, and it was on American Horror Story for a reason.  Because it’s creepy as hell.  It’s so freaking sketchy in the best of ways.

3. “The Memory Machine,” Julia Stone
Well.  Another unpublished mix, ye-ahhh.  But holy, holy hot damn.  I honestly cannot figure out how this song wasn’t written for the mix it’s on, because it’s so beautiful and creepy and tragic.

2. “Winter on the Weekend,” Julia Stone
And I haven’t even made-but-not-published the mix this one is for, but trust me, it is also perfect.  And it’s also exceptionally creepy.  Like to the point where I need to keep it in the context I invented for it to not just shudder sometimes.

1. …actually, the entire Decemberists catalogue.
Seriously.  I was having a conversation with someone at a party a couple of weekends ago, and the Decemberists came up: we were trying to think of happy songs of theirs.  And, uhm.  Not.  A.  Thing.  Even the ones that sound happy, like “Sixteen Military Wives,” are about cannibalism.  The Hazards of Love is my favorite album of all time, basically, and it is not anything but creepy.  We used to play “The Mariner’s Revenge Song” really loud when we were staying after school in high school to finish the newspaper layout and just dance around singing about pirate murders to vent our frustrations with our peers.  Etcetera.

Television Tuesday :: Bastards, Brothers, and Birthrights [a Game of Thrones fanmix]

7 Aug

1. Winter’s Coming (The Narrative)
I’m shaking with bruises, I can barely stand my shape, not when every inch, it hesitates and it breaks, and it breaks, and it breaks, and it breaks.  And the winter’s coming close, and my body is growing cold, and I’m trembling in fright, oh my.  ‘Cause I am a sinner with a crooked smile and you took to the rhythm of a no good liar.

2. Open (Regina Spektor)
In the night, the snow starts falling and everybody stares through their windows at the streetlights: too beautiful to see, I am in a room I’ve built myself, four straight walls, one floor, one ceiling.  And day after day, I wake up feeling, day after day, I wake up feeling, feeling

3.Many Funerals (Eisley)
Bring along your tricks and trade, we will lie here, here we lay.  And though this ship is out to sea, I’m content to lie peacefully.  Young and agile, seaside born, my parents death did I dear mourn.  Now in this wicked world risk I, bold endeavors by and by

4.Culling of the Fold (The Decemberists)
Better cut him up boy, and cut him up, girl.  Ply her heart with gold and silver, take your sweetheart down to the river, dash her on the paving stones, it may break your heart to break her bones, but someone’s got to do the culling… of the fold.  Oh, the culling… of the fold. (Oh, oh, oh, oh!)

5. Dragon Queen (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
How are you not going to show your scar?  How are you not going to get high, high?  My mouth is touching to your mouth is running. No loving, for nothing. Nobody knock my body out.

6. Will There Be Enough Water? (The Dead Weather)
When I said sail, will there be enough wind? Cool water, oh cool wind.  Just because you caught me does that make it a sin? Yeah, just because you caught me, does that make it a sin?

7. My Mirror Speaks (Death Cab for Cutie)
And then my mirror speaks with irreverence like a soldier I can’t command, it sees a child in the body of a full-grown man.  And he’s a man who hides from all that binds and a mess of fading lines, and there’s a tangled thread inside his head with nothing on either end, there’s nothing on either end.

8.  Rangers (A Fine Frenzy)
Further in and on we go, sightless creatures tugging at our clothes, cutting through the twilight, sword in hand, strangers once united against the land at the sound of the bells.  They’re pulling paper lanterns from their shelves.

9. Wildfire Forest (The Spring Standards)
I’ll be your wildfire forest, babe, you’ll be the water rushing over me.  Yeah, I need you so bad.  But it’s up to you to be good, you see, good for me, so come on, honey, put your worried mind away, at least just for a minute.  Even if there’s nothing to say.

10. The Storm, It’s Coming (Glen Hansard)
There’s a storm and it’s a raging in the belly of the slaving, it’s coming, it’s coming, it’s coming, it’s coming.  And when the wind howls at your gate already it is too late, it’s coming, it’s coming.

11. Going North (Missy Higgins)
Up where the hunted hide with ease under the arms of eyeless trees, up where the answers fall like leaves, oh and your love is all I need, yeah I’m going north.

12. These Stones Will Shout (The Raconteurs)
So if I were to just lay in silence and see if you would take control, these stones below me then may become violent.  And they will wrestle me, pester me, mess with me, just tryin’ to free your soul.  Speak to me and don’t speak softly, talk to me and let me know, grab hold of my shoulder and tell me, grab hold and do not let go

13. By the Horns (Julia Stone)
We tell half of the story, so we can take the things we need.  And some of our efforts are colorful, and some people they lose.  And some people live in the shadows so they never have to choose.

Bastards, Brothers, and Birthrights at 8tracks.

Whedon Wednesday :: The Widow’s Venom [a Natasha Romanoff - Black Widow fanmix]

25 Jul

1. The Prayer of François Villon (Molitva) (Regina Spektor)
Я знаю: ты все умеешь, я верую в мудрость твою, как верит солдат убитый, что он проживает в раю, как верит каждое ухо тихим речам твоим, как веруем и мы сами, не ведая, что творим!

2. Interstate (Jed Whedon and the Willing)
Funny the battles that we brave. Feels like we’re still in second grade. No longer people that we save as much as the money that we’ve made. Well, travel on. Interstate. At least we’re got our direction straight. Strange we children grow. Days will come and nights will go. But we get loud when the eastside meets the west coast crowd.

3. Believe Me (Ellie Goulding)
I need a mission, a dream to stop me talking to myself.  And now the silence is broken, and my soul is to sell.  I need to pick up the pieces to scatter to the wind, hold the city to your ears: you can hear the wind come in.

4.You Will Become (Glen Hansard)
Your beauty is nothing compared to what you will become, you will become. You will become in time become.  And we talked about talk of a gold ring when you brought me one step closer to the heart of things and we talked about everything til we laughed about it. Your honesty is nothing compared to what you will become, you will become.  You will become in time become.

5. Tigerlily (La Roux)
They can sell it all they want but you cannot agree, I don’t like the taste of damn morality.  You’ll find your bread and you butter where you fake it and put your face in the gutter of a snake pit.  But out communication is telepathy, what you give is what you get out of us naturally, and we can wait ’til the shadow grows long and turn the page of the story that has long since found a home.

6. Me and My Shadow (M. Ward)
There is a singer everyone has heard, at night he turns into a mockingbird, if I whistle in the dark, he’ll do that too.  I met him on the road at the close of day, he talked like me, he walked this way, I said “mockingbird, you ain’t no innovator.”

7. Artificial Nocturne (Metric)
I’m as fucked up as they say, I can’t fake the daytime, found an entrance to escape into the dark.  Got false lights for the sun, it’s an artificial nocturne, an outsider’s escape for a broken heart.

8. The Swell Season (The Swell Season)
Instrumental.

9. So Far From Your Weapon (The Dead Weather)
There’s a bullet in my pocket burning a hole, it’s so far from your weapon and the place you were born.  There’s a bullet in my pocket burning a hole, you’re so far from your weapon and you wanna go home.  You wanna get up? Let go? I say no.  You wanna get up? Let go?

10. Firewood (Regina Spektor)
Don’t look so shocked, don’t judge so harsh.  You don’t know, you are only spying.  Everyone knows it’s going to hurt, but at least we’ll get hurt trying.

11. Information Travels Faster (Death Cab for Cutie)
And here’s the kicker of this whole shebang: You’re in debt and completely fooled that you can look into the mirror and objectively rank your wounds.

12. Libra (The Narrative)
The evidence keeps on building and I’m sinking in defense, will a measurement of intentions come — a guilty conscience.  So let the air tip the scales, let’s go; one honest judge decide and you will find the facts weigh down to favor you in time.

13. Winning (Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton)
Knives don’t have your back. I wait and I count, but knives don’t have your back. I wait and I count to the last breath we take. What we made doesn’t make sense.  What’s a wolf without a pack? Open your chest and take the heart from it.

The Widow’s Venom at 8tracks.

Whedon Wednesday :: See How It Ends [a Buffy season 7 fanmix]

27 Jun

1. Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes)
I’m gonna fight ‘em off, a seven nation army couldn’t hold me back.  They’re gonna rip it off, taking their time right behind my back.  And I’m talking to myself at night because I can’t forget.

2.  Cuckoo (Lissie)
When you’re with us you don’t have to be quiet no more, no, no more.  I see you now, we talk about the way it used to be when we were brave, we misbehaved, yeah you know what I mean and you know why our battle cry always comes back to me.

3. Blackened Crown (Eisley)
Did you hear me holler at you to come save me, I’m in danger, my pearls have fallen into mud and you are too late.  This breath, precious to you, knocked from me, taken so faintly and I never feel ’til it’s too late.

4. For What Reason (Death Cab for Cutie)
I will hold a candle up to you to singe your skin. Brace yourself: I’m bent with bitterness.  When your apologies fail to ring true, so slick with that sarcastic slew of phrases like “I thought you knew” while keeping me in hot pursuit.

5. Giving Up the Gun (Vampire Weekend)
Your sword’s grown old and rusty, burnt beneath the rising sun.  It’s locked up like a trophy forgetting all the things it’s done and though it’s been a long time you’re right back where you started from.  I see it in your eyes, that now you’re giving up the gun.

6. Struggle (Mirah)
An angel I was, beloved by everyone.  The devil you were, just what I made you become.  And I don’t regret this way it’s gonna be, I just hope she gets treated better than you did me.  You should give what you find and not tread so fearfully, if you felt good inside you wouldn’t be so scared of me.

7. To Save Me (M. Ward)
And he shifts in his sleep and the earth begins to quake, yeah, he shifts in his sleep and the earth begins to quake.  So how much difference could it possibly make?  How much effort could it possibly take?  To save me, to save me, to save me, just to save me, Save me from sailing over the edge?

8. Sprig (Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton)
Awake in terror, words staring back at him, never to be used. Their hands on hold, so quiet, they could hear each other’s thinking, denying.  Garner interest, each other’s thinking, denying. Garner interest, making of life, a forged painting, life’s big magnet tug, tugging.

9.  Maybe (The Submarines)
There is a sign among the remnants of all our words, best left unsaid, and when the truth flies in our direction do we work it through or lose our heads?  Maybe, maybe, maybe we’re strong, but maybe, maybe, maybe we’re wrong.

10. Accident and Emergency (Patrick Wolf)
So what happens when you lose everything?  You just carry on and with a grin, sing for all that love life has to bring, and just get yourself back into the ring, knock us out, for accident and emergency.

11.  Getting Scared (Imogen Heap)
The only times in my life the sun was meant to shine for me, you made it pour down, pour down with tears of rain, dug my pride with a knife, encaged by your obsession with me.  Time for some mental torture and screams of justified pain.  So ya gonna chase me now boy?  Yeah ya gonna corner me now boy?  You think ya gonna threaten me now boy?  Somehow I don’t think so.

12. Guiding Light (Muse)
Impure hearts stumble, in my hands they crumble, and fragile and stripped to the core, I can’t hurt you anymore.  Loved by numbers, you’re losing life’s wonder, touch like strangers detached, I can’t feel you anymore.  The sunshine trapped in our hearts, it could rise again, but I’m lost, and crushed, and cold, and confused with no guiding light left inside.

13. Last of Days (A Fine Frenzy)
Something’s causing fear to fly, rising like a dark knight in silence.  Traffic’s slow with broken boats heading for the sky and I’m an island.  I watched you disappear into the clouds, swept away into another town.  The world carries on without you but nothing remains the same.  I’ll be lost without you until the last of days.

Whedon Wednesday :: Years and Seconds and Years [a Victor - Tony fanmix]

30 May

1. Clean Slate (M. Ward)
When I was a younger man I thought the pain of defeat would last forever, but now I don’t know what it would take to make my heart back down, ‘cause I only have to wait a little while before I get my clean slate.

2. I Guess I Should Go to Sleep (Jack White)
I guess I should go to sleep, too hard standing on my own two feet.  Been walkin’ too long on a dead end street, I guess I should go to sleep.

3. Man of a Thousand Faces (Regina Spektor)
The man of a thousand faces sits down at the table, eats a small lump of sugar and smiles at the moon like he knows her.

4. Sleepyhead (Eisley)
Quiet falling all around me, fall onto my knees before you, break the tie that binds me to it far away from here.  Falling, I’m falling, can’t you hear me calling?  Running, I’m running, catch my hand and hold me

5. Steadier Footing (Death Cab for Cutie)
And this is the chance I never got to make a move, but we just talk about the people we’ve met in the last five years and will we remember them in ten more.

6.On My Chest (Lissie)
It’s an abstract place where I hold you and the relief I felt gets confused.  And I have cried a couple of times when I’m wondering about you…

7. A Martyr for my Love for You (The White Stripes)
I could stay a while but sooner or later I’ll break your smile.  And I can tell a joke but one of these days I’m bound to choke.  And we could share a kiss but I feel like I can’t go through with this.  And I bet we could build a home but I know the right thing for me to do is to leave you alone.

8. Burn (Apocalyptica)
Instrumental.

9. Endless Sleep (Sucré)
I woke up to a voice who said I had been dreaming and I missed, I missed everything, I missed everything.  Oh heaven, please help me, help me from falling back again.  In hibernation, a century of loneliness

10. End All (The Narrative)
I hold you here in my mind, where I am coming undone with fleeting emotions a landslide is born.  And the pieces will tumble through cracks in your floor.

11. City of Delusion (Muse)
Stay away from me, build a fortress and shield your beliefs.  Touch the divine as we fall in line.  Can I believe when I don’t trust, all your theories turn to dust. I choose to hide from the all seeing eye. Destroy this city of delusion and break these walls down and I will avenge and justify my reasons with your blood

12. Last Man (Jed Whedon and the Willing)
Last man left is left alive.  You’re in the fire of a fight.  High end, all right.  Shinin’ in infrared light,  You’re in my telescopic sight.  High end, all right.

13. Soldier (Angus & Julia Stone)
I’m a soldier but I don’t know how to fight, I’m your best friend but I’m scared to see you tonight, I’m the darkness but I want to be the light.  Oh how I want to be, oh how I want to be.
