For Halloween, ish. Even though none of these, literally none of them, are “spooky spooky Halloween monster” creepy.
6. “I Will Possess Your Heart,” Death Cab for Cutie
This is… basically an ode to obsession. I mean, there’s a reason it’s on my Eric/Sookie mix. Because obsession. Mind you, I still love this song, I love it a lot. It’s deceptively cute (remember that Ben Gibbard problem?) and it’s a really great jam. But it’s creepy.
5. “You Will Be Mine,” The Narrative
I think I’ve mentioned this song before. And it’s creepy for the exact same reasons as the above. It’s on a different mix, one I haven’t yet put up, but it suits with the creepy as well.
4. “Special Death,” Mirah
Oh my god, but I’m obsessed with this song. I’ve mentioned this before how many times? It never stops being true, and it was on American Horror Story for a reason. Because it’s creepy as hell. It’s so freaking sketchy in the best of ways.
3. “The Memory Machine,” Julia Stone
Well. Another unpublished mix, ye-ahhh. But holy, holy hot damn. I honestly cannot figure out how this song wasn’t written for the mix it’s on, because it’s so beautiful and creepy and tragic.
2. “Winter on the Weekend,” Julia Stone
And I haven’t even made-but-not-published the mix this one is for, but trust me, it is also perfect. And it’s also exceptionally creepy. Like to the point where I need to keep it in the context I invented for it to not just shudder sometimes.
1. …actually, the entire Decemberists catalogue.
Seriously. I was having a conversation with someone at a party a couple of weekends ago, and the Decemberists came up: we were trying to think of happy songs of theirs. And, uhm. Not. A. Thing. Even the ones that sound happy, like “Sixteen Military Wives,” are about cannibalism. The Hazards of Love is my favorite album of all time, basically, and it is not anything but creepy. We used to play “The Mariner’s Revenge Song” really loud when we were staying after school in high school to finish the newspaper layout and just dance around singing about pirate murders to vent our frustrations with our peers. Etcetera.
