When I’m feeling blue, I like to immerse myself in fiction that cheers me. And for some reason, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has become something on that list. It is both ridiculous and awesome, and I love these freaking little ponies a lot. I think writing for cartoons like this would actually be really fun in its way.
So today, AJ and Rainbow are going to have an iron pony competition. Because I guess the lesson today will be that athletic prowess is less important than friendship or something. (Slash. Oh my gosh, I am even more comfortable in my AJ = Buffy, Rainbow = Faith analysis. Remember in “Doppelgangland” when Wesley was running tests on Buffy and Faith and they were all competitive with each other, though a little more subtly than this? Because these guys are not subtle at all.)
Why are they having a rodeo? Why is Spike dressed as a Viking while being lassoed?
Oh, also I bet another message will be that everyone is good at different things! Everyone has different talents and trying to compare is silly because everyone is useful in their own way!
…how are baby birds an athletic event? Oh, I see. Still doesn’t seem athletic.
“Fillies and gentlecolts.” Oh my gosh.
Ohhh, bad one, Rainbow. Bad bad. Please stop making fun of Twi liking books. Everyone is good at different things. Besides, Twi is just there to have fun and learn. Winning isn’t necessarily the goal here. Because winning isn’t everything, friendship is. Oh, and she’s reveling in scenery. That’s delightful. Twi is so cute.
This is some tortoise and the hare ridiculousness.
I kind of enjoy Pinkie’s random announcing tangents, actually. Sort of insane, but the good kind right now.
But these ponies are having athletic competition. That is relevant to real life as per the Olympics. But ponies are more interesting.
How old are the ponies? I am legitimately curious. Because it totally matters.
Oh, look, they tied. I’m shocked! And look at Twi with her fifth place medal! Pacing herself like her book said! Baaaby pony I love you.
Princess why are you here. You just said that, but now you’re here. And yep, friendship is more important. Told you so. And I don’t even care that it’s predictable because it’s adorable.
And next episode. Opalescence? OH that’s her cat. She has a cat. Where did the cat come from? Stable eyes, Rarity love, that’s what you’re up to. And wait what she has pony glasses. For close up work apparently. Oh, Rarity, occasionally you win me over a little bit.
Sewing with her unicorn magic. Oh my gosh, yes.
Why do they wear dresses for the gala when they don’t wear anything (but AJ’s hat) daily? Here’s generous Rarity offering to do some command sewing, oh boy. This dress is going to be – oh wait, and now she’s going to spruce up AJ’s duds. And she’s going to do something for Rainbow, because Rainbow just entered, and she’ll do something for everyone won’t she?
Oh god, they’re all going to match, it’s going to be crazy. No, fashion show, that’s even more insane. But she’s so enthusiastic about working and giving and helping! While wearing her pony glasses! And singing a sewing song, apparently. I feel like I might have heard this before somewhere? I am of course insane.
Pinkie’s dress is so froufrou in that sketch. And what are those fancy laurel branches on theoretical Rainbow mannequin’s head?
Now everyone’s… how will they react? Will it be good? Will they be perplexed? I mean, they’re nuts, but for pony clothes, not bad. They’re going to all learn a lesson – is the lesson going to be that you do things to be nice or that you have to be yourself? Flutter is so bashful.
Rarity, you did sort of offer to do this, but maybe you could ask them what they want their dresses to look like, and that would help.
Flutter, baby, you learned about fashion from where? Rarity is freaking out isn’t she? Her mane is all wilty. I’m not sure which lesson they’re going to end up learning, but it could be any variety of them. I kind of understand this stress feeling, though. I’ve been there, Rarity dear. Is it ridiculous that I feel more sympathetic toward her now that she’s wearing glasses? Because I think I kind of do.
(That, and the understanding. Poor baby with her sudden good intentions.)
The cat is all snotty, because the cat doesn’t understand that ponies should be themselves. Rarity is going to be twitchy about this, isn’t she? But all her friends are happy. I know, the fancy designer pony could be impressed by how Rarity has managed to capture each pony’s individual spirit or something.
What the hell, DJ unicorn.
Spike really likes announcing things, huh? The essence of their very souls, Spike? Good boy.
Rainbow’s pony frock kind of looks Asgardian.
Oh, snooty pony, don’t be a jerk. But now – how is this going to work? I’m actually curious.
Is Rarity doing a monologue from a 40s movie? I think she sort of is. With her pincurls and her bathrobe and slippers.
Somehow building her a dress is the solution. But it was – oh, I see, the message is that sometimes you should listen to others who have more knowledge in a field maybe? Work together and don’t succumb to peer pressure? Don’t do too many favors for friends, lest they cause fights? Be yourself? Trying to please everyone is bad. Okay, I’m good with it. Also, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. I wrote that before she said it, I swear.
