About which I know heinously little this year. So, let’s just analyze based on presumption! Why the hell not. I won’t even bother discussing categories I can’t even presume about.
Best Musical
Leap of Faith
Newsies
Nice Work If You Can Get It
Once
I vote Once, just because I love the movie so much. Newsies is mediocre, nostalgic but not really something I give a damn about, I don’t need a Gershwin review, and anything based on a Steve Martin movie makes me shudder a little bit like the snob I am. Even if it does star Raul Esparza.
Best Book of a Musical
Lysistrata Jones
Newsies
Nice Work If You Can Get It
Once
Again. I will just be voting for Once by default.
Best original score (music and/or lyrics) written for the theater
Bonnie & Clyde
Newsies
One Man, Two Guvnors
Peter and the Starcatcher
And I haven’t even heard of any except for Newsies before. The Peter one has Adam Chanler-Berat and Christian Borle and Celia Keenan-Bolger, but that doesn’t tell me anything about the score, so I have no opinion.
Best revival of a play
Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman
Gore Vidal’s The Best Man
Master Class
Wit
Help, favoritism showing through. I don’t even like Death of a Salesman that much, at least I didn’t when I read it in high school, but I’m voting for it on the sole fact that my baby Fran Kranz is in it. Also Philip Seymour Hoffman is classy and good at performing, so.
Best revival of a musical
Evita
Follies
The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess
Jesus Christ Superstar
I… actually don’t like any of these that much. I’m familiar with all of the material, so I guess I’d just have to see to judge. I have a feeling I’m going to be making most of my calls on Tony night next month.
Best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play
Hell, I’ll just say I’m voting Philip Seymour Hoffman by default.
Best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical
Sure, give it to Audra McDonald. She’s always good, right?
Best performance by an actor in a featured role in a play
What that Peter is a play play? Whatever, Christian Borle is awesome.
Gorramit, I am so heinously out of the theatre world loop lately.
