Music Monday :: a love letter to the Civil Wars

26 Jul

A dear friend of me was raving about them, and once she gave me their album Barton Hollow, I saw why.   Comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White, they’re simply put my newest obsession.  It could be part that I’m really in that folksy twangy alt-country place in my life right now, but I cannot stop listening to them.  At all.  And I am unashamed.

Proper duos make me really happy, and that could be it, too.  Proper harmonies come out of proper duos, and proper harmonies are my all-time favorite thing of all time.  And they’re so whimsical at times.  Not too whimsical, but sort of darling.  I mean, “I’ve Got This Friend”?  Just starts out so damn cute.

They’ve got really charming tunes, honestly.  The way they play with notes is refreshing, not tiresome and pretentious but not mundane either.  And their instrumentations are charming, too.  That twang is there, but it’s not too twangy so as not to appeal to someone who’s… anti-twang?  I don’t know how you could be such a thing, but hey.

Also, I give them many commendations for singing even a couple lines of one song in French.

These guys have already become a go-to mainstay on my fanmixes.  (All ones that haven’t yet been put up, but.)  They’re perfect for everything I need them for, and that’s amazing.

Basically… they’re just beautiful.  They’re worth a listen, for sure.  And I’ve got an early morning, so this is sort of a short love letter.  But a sincere one.
